Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!

Give me liberty or give me death!

Patrick Henry said this during a speech in 1775 to the Second Virginia convention as he was trying to convince them to send troops to the Revolutionary War. It worked! They voted to support the Revolutionary War by sending soldiers. And eventually we won the war and America was born. After creating and ratifying the U.S. Constitution, they immediately added 10 amendments that became known as the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights are the basis for Americans personal freedoms and limit the power of the federal government.

Give me liberty or give me death!

That phrase meant something when I was growing up. Year after year my teachers taught us that in America everyone had a right to make up their own mind about what was right and wrong–but that’s not true any longer! People aren’t allowed to think or say something different than the mainstream. I’m certainly not advocating violence in any way saying we have the right to do anything we want because we don’t. But I grew up in an America who’s motto was: I may not agree with you, but I will fight to the death for you to have the right to say it.

Give me liberty or give me death!

That America seems to have completely disappeared. It’s been happening slowly for many years but now the transitions seems to be complete.

And that makes me really sad.

I am not a political person, but I love my country. It’s not perfect but it’s my country! And one of the things that made us strong is accepting that every American had a right to their own opinion–even if you didn’t agree with it or like it. That’s what freedom of speech is about or what it’s supposed to be about. We can’t legislate people to think the way we want them to think–even though that seems to be the current trend. People should be able to think or say what they want as long as they don’t act on it in a way that is against the law.

Actions are different than words. Every American has a right to voice their own opinion–even when everyone else disagrees with them!

Give me liberty or give me death!
