I AM WHO I AM.
Exodus 3: 14
God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
Last post, we talked about the name God gave himself in Exodus 3: 14, but this made me curious if there were any other times that God used the name I AM in the Old Testament. I found several more times where God uses I AM and they can help us understand even more about God and who he is.
I AM your healer.
Exodus 15: 26
He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”
I AM holy.
Leviticus 11:44
I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.
I am with you.
I am your help and your strength.
Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
I AM sovereign.
Isaiah 43:13
“Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?”
Jeremiah 32:27
“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?”
I AM all powerful
Genesis 17:1
Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty;
Walk before Me, and be blameless.
I AM your shield.
I AM your reward.
Genesis 15: 1
After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
These “I Am” statements and others found in the Old Testament show God’s eternal nature, authority, and presence. They reveal his limitless power, his unchanging nature and the intimate relationship he wants with his children. Understanding more about God and his nature allows us to trust him more and more.
