God’s Plans For You

A devotional by Alexis A. Goring

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

When I worked as a classroom teacher, my favorite day was Career Day.

I delighted over all of the wonderful opportunities I could share with my students through the lens of my creative and traditional career friends.

I loved bringing them into the classroom to show my students many things that could be possible for them to pursue as they grew. I still remember the day when Mary Kate, a professional photographer who captures weddings and other lifestyle events, visited my second grade students. She used technology to project her photography onto the big screen for all to see. She also allowed the students to view the photos on her iPad for a personal touch.

I still remember one student—we’ll call her “Rosie”—poring over the wedding galleries, completely captivated. I figured she was taking a special interest in Mary Kate’s work. I asked Rosie if she would like to be a wedding photographer one day. She nodded and said yes without taking her eyes off of the photos that captivated her heart.

Recently, I remembered that day and I thought, “Is this not how God is with us?”

He sees all that we can be before we are born (Psalm 139:13-16) and has planned our entire life! However, it’s a journey that we must embark on with God at the helm. We must allow Him to guide us and see His wisdom for our next steps.

Perhaps God takes great joy in giving us glimpses of our future and showing us His plans for our life. I believe that God rejoices in watching us develop all of the talents and gifts He’s given us.

How delighted God must be when He sees us realizing our full potential and stepping into our God-ordained destiny! Imagine how He feels when His plans for our life unfold in His perfect timing. The Bible says He has good plans for our life (Jeremiah 29:11). These are plans to give us an hope and a future, and plans that will prosper us, not harm us. He set this into motion before we were a thought in our parents’ heads. We serve a God who knows us from the beginning and His plans for our life are best. Let’s remember to trust Him and follow His lead.

A journey with God is never wasted because He knows us better than we know ourselves. Will you trust God to give you what you need and usher you into all of the wonderful plans He has in store?
