1 Kings 9: 12

And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

So exactly how did I change my life filled with misery to a life filled with peace and joy?

As a speech pathologist for deaf and hard-of-hearing children, I learned early in my career that listening skills were crucial, not only to speech and language development, but to success in school as well.

During my thirty-four years as an SLP, I developed several checklists that broke down listening skills into smaller steps. Some of these checklists contained up to 60 to 70 skills, but don’t worry I’m not going to do that to you. There are only two spiritual listening skills we’re going to be talking about—Listening FOR God and Listening TO God.

Listening FOR God. The key to hearing God is to listen for him. We can’t hear the message if we aren’t paying attention. To hear from God more, we’ve got to focus on him; spend time with him; and listen for him.

I remember when I first reconnected with God, I’d hear authors or preachers talking about hearing God’s voice. This was a huge source of frustration for me because I sure wasn’t hearing God’s voice, no matter where I looked or where I listened. But as I studied God’s Word and spent more time with God, the better listener I became.

Listening TO God.  God shares his love; his wisdom; and all the other promises in His Holy Word. He tells us again and again what we need to do have a successful life.

You can be the most learned biblical scholar in the world and still not benefit from it. The way to benefit from God’s Word is to apply it to your life. In other words, to listen TO God.

God won’t force you spend time with him or study His Word, but if you want the life God planned for you, then you need to spend time listening For God and listening TO God. It’s so easy to miss out on the good things God has planned because we simply aren’t listening.

In my own life, the better listener I became, the better choices I made. The better choices I made, the more my life changed—for the better. One choice at a time. One change at a time. As long as you’re breathing, you can begin to make better choices. And with each choice comes a change— changes that will improve your life for the better.

If you want to change your life, it’s time to become a better listener, spiritually speaking.  Learn to listen FOR and TO God’s still small voice. God can speak to us in many ways. After all, he is God. He can use a still small voice, but other times his voice will be as thunder; and sometimes he might even use a hula hoop!
