So in our last lesson, we talked about the parable of the four soils. I left you with the question: how do we prepare our hearts to receive God’s Word so that it will produce a crop? Mark’s version of the parable tells us clearly how to prepare our heart to receive God’s Word.
Mark 4: 20
Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.
Step 1: Hear the Word.
How do we hear the word? We read it. We study it. We memorize it. We listen to sermons. We read books from other Christians who have already studied God’s Word.
Step 2: Accept the Word.
Hearing the word is only the first step. We need to believe the Word; to accept the Word. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, especially in the world we live today. Many scientists tell us the Bible is wrong. Do we believe the scientists or God? Society tells us that Biblical principles are wrong. One example is that we should punish our enemy rather than love them. Do we believe society our God?
There’s a third step that’s we can’t neglect.
James 1: 22
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Step 3: Follow the Word.
When we follow these three steps, we will produce a crop, meaning our life be fruitful for God in many different ways. One way being that we are able to live in peace and joy in spite of difficult circumstances. God’s Word has so much power in it, but only if we follow the three steps we’ve talked about today.
