God-Given Dreams

 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Christmas is over and the new year is fast approaching. It’s a good time to reflect on your life–reflecting on the past year and thinking about the coming year.  Are you happy with the direction your life is going? If so, great! If not, why not? I believe in God-given dreams. I also believe working toward God-given dreams will add peace and joy and purpose to your life.

In my book, God, Life & Hula Hoops I talk about the fact that each of us are snowflakes. Just as each snowflake is different so are we. Not every person is the same. Not every Christian is the same! God created each of us to be unique and we should honor God by being the best US that we can be. He didn’t create us to be like our neighbor, our brother or sister, or even our pastor.

But he did create each of us to serve Him and others.

How we do that depends on who we are. My good works are different from yours and yours from mine. That doesn’t mean mine is better than yours or yours better than mine. We are different but the part of the puzzle that’s the same is that each of us was created for a reason—to serve God’s kingdom.

My God-given dream is to be a writer. As I’ve grown spiritually, I’ve come to know this truth about myself. Somewhere along the way my writing has become my ministry. Mostly I write Christian Fiction and a little non-fiction as well. Some people may disagree that Christian Fiction is a ministry. After all, it’s just fiction. But let’s not forget Jesus used stories called parables to teach and I like to think that’s what I do with the stories I create—entertainment with a message.

I love sitting at my computer creating stories, then revising and editing, and rewriting and editing again and again. Most of the people I know would consider that a punishment but I love it! Because that’s the way God created me. I don’t have any doubt that had I never started writing, my puzzle would be incomplete. There would have been something missing in my life.

Now that I am retired and have health issues, I’m even more grateful for my God-given dream. I can’t imagine my life without my writing. It gives me purpose and focus as well as peace and joy. I’m not special. God gives each of us dreams, goals, and passions. He gives all of us dream. That is his gift to us. What we do with those dreams are our gift to him.

So this year, take a step forward toward your dream.
