Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil; for you are with me.

your rod and your staff, they comfort me

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

certainly Psalm 23 is the most well known of the Psalms and the most loved. But  over time, it’s become associated with serious illness, death, and funerals. And it can be a comfort in those situations, but let’s look a tit today through the eyes of the living–which we are. There are words of comfort and encouragement for us as well.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want

Jesus referred to himself the shepherd of his flock. We are his flock. And just as a shepherd takes care of his sheep, so God will take care of us.  But sheep don’t always  know what’s best, and neither do we.  If we let the shepherd guide us, we will not be in want.ells

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.

Another wonderful passage and promise. So many of us are too busy. too anxious,  too weary to enjoy life. If we turn to the shepherd we can find rest and restoration which brings peace and joy. And who doesn’t want more of that.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

This verse tells us that God will not forsake us during our tough times. He is with us and taking care of us. Of course, we all want him to take the tough times awAy or even prevent them from happening, but it doesn’t work that way. But we need to know that even when bad things happen God is still with us.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,

This passage shows us that Psalm 23 isn’t just about death or the shadow of death, it’s about all the days our life. Our shepherd will be with us for the good days and the bad ones, following us, providing for us, protecting us, loving us.

What a wonderful promise!
