Praying God’s Word

Isaiah 55: 11

so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Happy New Year!

Several weeks ago, I was introduced to this book, PRAYING THE BIBLE by Donald S. Whitney. I highly recommend you read this book if you’re at all interested in this topic. The idea behind the book is praying God’s Word as a way to deepen prayer time with God. It’s not a new concept to me, I’ve often prayed specific verses, especially when I was at my worst during my brain tumor journey.

Using God’s Word this way brought me much-needed comfort and peace. It strengthened me as I struggled with my health issues. And amazingly, it enabled me to experience God’s joy on a daily basis, in spite of how bad I felt physically.

So I definitely believe in Praying God’s Word.

This book goes beyond just praying specific verses (nothing wrong with that). It suggests you use Bible scriptures as a way to have a two-way conversation with God. You read the verse (God’s Word), then you respond to that verse in prayer.

It’s a wonderful idea and I’ve been doing it for several weeks now. It has definitely re-energized my prayer time. There’s no wrong way of praying the Bible. You might read a verse and be led to pray for someone. Or you might be led to praise God or give thanks for specific things. Or you might read a verse and then move on from that verse to the next.

Mr. Whitney suggests starting with the Psalms as a way to get comfortable with this “new” way of praying. Which is why I’m including Psalms in my reading plan (New Testament In a Year) for this year. But you can pray any of the scriptures you read, not just Psalms.

YOUR TURN: Do you pray Bible verses? Tell us about it.

God Bless & Good Reading.

  1. Thanks for sharing this. A missionary friend introduced this concept to me many years ago. So glad you’ve doing well. On December 19, my daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Surgery followed on 23rd. She’s to come home today after a week of physical therapy. Chemotherapy and radiation scheduled to follow. I would appreciate your prayers. Happy New Year!
