Jesus Stays

A devotional by Alexis A. Goring

Oftentimes, I feel like my friendships are like a revolving door—friends come in and out of my life. It feels like nobody stays.

I’ve struggled with this revolving door of friendship concept for most of my life until recently when God brought it to my mind that no matter who comes and goes, Jesus stays. He is my true friend for life and nothing can change that; nobody can take His friendship away from me. My connection with the Lord is the only relationship that will never disappoint me or fail.

In the song “The God Who Stays”, Christian musician Matthew West paints a beautiful picture of a friendship that lasts forever.

He opens the song with his heart on the line, saying that he feels like a lost cause and that if he were God, he would have given up on himself by now. West goes on to say that he would have turned and walked away from himself because he sees himself as damaged beyond repair.

Then West sings about how grateful he is that God doesn’t see him in the same negative light. No matter how damaged West feels, God isn’t going anywhere. Jesus stays. He stays through your doubt, your uncertainty, your fears, your failures, and mistakes. He doesn’t walk away from you; he runs to you with His arms open wide.

God promises us that there’s nothing in this world or the universe that can separate us from Him, just like He says in Romans 8:38-39!

When we feel that we’ve disappointed God, we may try to hide from Him. Often we think that we have to earn His love but that’s not true either. Again, nothing can separate us from the love of God. There’s nothing we can do to make Him love us less and there’s also nothing we can do to make Him love us more. His love for us is constant, steady, stable, and endures forever.

Even when the whole world walks away, God stays. The world walks out of our life; God walks in. The world turns its back on us; God welcomes us with open arms. Why? Because He loves us so much that He thinks we’re worth laying down His life to save ours (John 3:16).

In a world that’s filled with chaos, God is our one true constant source of stability. If we have Jesus, we have all that we need. He will always provide. And if we feel like we cannot keep friends, we need to remember Him because Jesus Christ is our true friend for life.

I hope that this devotional has encouraged your heart.

May God bless you and keep you! Remember how much He loves you. He is yours, forever!
