The Presence of God
A devotional by Alexis A. Goring
There is a saying that there are no atheists on a sinking ship or a crashing plane.
We humans are mere mortals who are subject to death. It is true because when we feel like we’re close to death, we often instinctively call out to a higher power. Some call that “the universe” and many call that “God.”
As a follower of Jesus Christ, I believe in the one true living God (Jeremiah 10:10) who created the universe. One of the most sacred versions of His name is Yahweh. But in the United States of America, most people call Him “God.”
I think that deep inside, every human knows that there is a God, He is real and He is the only One who can save us from death. The good news is that God sent His Son Jesus Christ to live and minister on this Earth to show us the way to Heaven and restore our relationship with God. Read John 3:16-17 for His mission statement.
There’s a beautiful song about God being real and being there for us. It’s performed by a Contemporary Christian music group called Casting Crowns. The song title is, “I Know You’re There”. Allow me to paraphrase the lyrics and show you the heart of the song today.
The lyrics open with addressing the possibility of death. The singer’s words are that if all they had was one last breath, they’d spend it praising Jesus. If they only had one more prayer to pray, they’d pray to God their Heavenly Father. They know that God is real and that He is always listening to the prayers and petitions of humankind. The message of this is that even if they were granted a thousand lives, they’d want to spend every moment with Jesus!
The lyrics state that we know God is there for us and we know that He sees us. He provides solid ground for us to walk on and He orders our steps in His Word (Proverbs 16:9). God’s Word is a light unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).
We cannot “find” God anywhere yet at the same time, we can “find” Him everywhere: nature, whispers from Heaven to our hearts, people who God sends into our life to love us, strangers who have been there for us. Evidence of an Almighty God is literally all around us! We just need to quiet our busy brains and take time to notice.
The singer goes on to say that they’d stake all their chances on God because He always comes through! If they had a platform where all the world was listening, they’d tell everyone about Jesus in a way that resonates with their soul and shows them how they (the singer) feel about God whose love for humankind endures forever and is completely unconditional.
The song ends with the singer repeating the song title “I Know You’re There” several times. It’s their way of driving their main point home to the listener and showing the world what they believe.
Have you heard this song? Take time to listen to it here and be encouraged by the fact that the Eternal King of the universe loves you with all of His heart and He’s not going anywhere. He will be there for you from now until eternity. However, He’s not going to force His way into your life (Revelation 3:20) because He wants an authentic relationship with You. God wants you to want Him to be present in your life.
I can speak from experience that spending your life in the presence of God is the most beautiful thing. His Presence is comforting and a true blessing. Knowing that God is on your side so you don’t have to face the trials of life alone can bring your heart such joy!
And if you are ever on a sinking ship or crashing plane, you can trust that crying out to Jesus to save you will not be in vain. If He doesn’t save your life giving you more time to live on this Earth, then if you’ve given your life to Him, you know that you have the hope of living forever in an immortal body when Jesus returns to Earth to take you to Heaven. So either way, putting your faith in Him is always a win-win!
I hope that this message has encouraged your heart and given you a dose of hope. Please know that God is real and He will always be here for you. You won’t know that you can trust Him if you don’t try. The good news is, if you try, you’re in for the most amazing experience of your life because God is good and He will never lie (Numbers 23:19)!
God keeps all of His promises that you can read about in The Holy Bible.
May God bless you with His presence and His peace. You are special to Him!
Thanks so much, Alexis.
