Blessings and Burdens

It’s that time of the month again for a devotion by guest writer, Alexis A. Goring. Thanks so much, Alexis!

Blessings and Burdens

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

–Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Lately, God has impressed me with the thought of counting my blessings, not my burdens.

He has also shown me why I need to cast my cares and burdens upon Him, not only because He can handle it, but because He wants to help me bear my burdens (Matthew 11:29-30). God wants me to be worry-free and trust that He’ll take care of me just like He takes care of the sparrows (Matthew 6:26).

So why do I worry? I’d say it’s because of the unstable, unrestful state of this world we live in. But I know that there is one thing in this life that is certain: Jesus Christ! He’s alive and well, very present in human affairs, and very active in every part of this planet. You cannot hide from God. There are no secrets with Him because He knows all. God knows you better than you know yourself and He wants to guide you through this life on Earth. He loves you!

God doesn’t make empty promises (Numbers 23:19). If He says He’ll be there for you, He will. If He tells you to cast all your burdens upon Him because He cares for you, He means it. If He soothes your soul by saying He’ll never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5) then you can take that promise to the bank and cash it in full. I love that we serve a God who keeps His word!

There’s a song performed by the Oakwood Aeolians that reminds me of the importance of why when facing tribulations, we should “Take it to the Lord in Prayer.”

The lyrics begin by reminding us that we have a Friend in Jesus Christ who wants to bear our burdens. It is a privilege to talk to Him about everything that concerns us. He cares about it all! When we do not take our problems to Jesus and try to handle it on our own that causes us to bear needless pain. It is needless because we don’t need to carry these burdens! We need to give it all to God. He can handle it! When trials and temptations surface and surround us, we need to take it to the Lord in prayer!

When we are burdened and overwhelmed by the evil and unrest in this world, we need to pray about that too. God promises over and over again that He is our solace and refuge, our safe place in a world that is not safe. He’s not afraid of our honesty, our pain, our sorrow. Our lives are an open book before Him. He knows what we’re thinking before we say a word. He loves you with all of His Heart and He wants to be there for you. So don’t despair; take it to the Lord in prayer!

This devotional message is a life lesson in the making for me as well as you. I hope and pray that we all will learn (if we have not already) to take our burdens to God and to remember all the wonderful ways He’s blessing us. Have you ever tried to count your blessings, not your burdens? You may find that all of God’s beautiful blessings in your life far outweigh your heavy burdens.
