Amazing Grace!

Galatians 3: 29

If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

No song evokes more feeling to a great many Christians than Amazing Grace. It has touched the heart and soul of many generations of Christians. It has the power to make all of us aware of the immensity of God’s love for us even though we don’t deserve it.

His grace did indeed save a wretch like me.

But what is grace?

The classic definition of grace is the unmerited favor of God. Unmerited means that we don’t deserve God’s favor. We can’t work hard enough to get it. We can’t be good enough to deserve it. It means that God loves us and wants to give us favor that we don’t deserve. When we make the decision to become part of God’s family, we receive an inheritance called salvation.

Our inheritance is so much more than the promise of eternal life with God. Salvation is a multi-faceted gift. When we open and look inside the gift of salvation, we find there are other gifts waiting to be opened as well. When we become a child of God he gives us an inheritance, not because he has to but because he loves us.

God’s grace is that inheritance.

I’ve come to the conclusion that grace is a God-sized word that is so magnificent that it encompasses many different concepts into one simple word: love; favor; kindness; forgiveness; mercy; freedom; strength; power; and so much more. And why not? The Creator of the universe certainly can encompass all of these wondrous qualities into one God-sized word.

Amazing Grace!
