Watch Your Step—Avoiding the scat!

I wrote a series of devotions for a friend who volunteers at a Wilderness Camp for teenagers in our area. The topics she gave me were: survival; animal skins; animal tracks; scat; and butterflies. It was an exercise in creativity for me to come up with devotions that related to her topics, but with God’s help, I did. Here’s the one for SCAT. Hope you enjoy it.

Tonight, we’re going to get down and dirty and talk about some specific actions that God considers bad, evil, or wrong. Whatever term you use, the truth is it’s the scat we don’t want to step in. Stepping in the scat causes problems for you–sometimes big, sometimes little. But why not avoid the scat if possible.

And it’s possible. The Bible gives us all sorts of examples of the scat we need to avoid.

The Ten Commandments are a pretty good guideline of what to do and not to do, but we’re going to look at a few other verses as well.

PROVERBS 6: 16-19

There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,  a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

In case you don’t know what haughty means it’s thinking we are better than others. The others are self-explanatory, but I’d like to point out that last one. God detests a man (or woman) who stirs up dissension. I wonder how many of us are guilty of that one!

If that’s not enough, here’s another list of behaviors that God finds offensive.

Galatians 5: 17: 21

For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;  idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

That’s quite a list! Between those two verses and the Ten Commandments, I think we can be pretty sure of behaviors that will not end well for us if we make the choice to participate in them. It’s much better to avoid the scat than to have to clean up the mess from stepping in the scat.
