2nd Corinthians 5: 17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Life is about habits.

Life is a lot more about our habits than we realize or, maybe, even more than we want to admit. We, Americans, pride ourselves on being independent, being able to make our own free choices.

But let’s think for a minute. Most of us get up around the same time every day. Why? HABIT. Most of us eat about the same foods from week to week. Why? HABIT. Most of us buy our gas at the same station and our food from the same grocery store. Why? HABIT.

Life is about habits.

Habits are good. They let us move through our day without having to stop and agonize at every moment about every one of the millions of details in our lives. But habits can be BAD as well.

Often the way we react to frustration, pain, anger, doubt, and any other negative emotion or event is a HABIT. We yell, we scream, we lash out—physically-emotionally-verbally-because that’s the way we are used to doing it. HABIT.

If you’re not happy with some of the habits you’ve picked up, then time to do something about it. It’s not going to be easy and you’re the only one who can make the choice, the commitment, and then the follow-through to change it.

Here’s a few ideas to get you started on creating new habits and a happier life:

  1. Pick ONE habit—not all of them.
  2. Pray about that habit every morning. Ask God to remind you and strengthen you.
  3. When you mess up (and you will—or at least I do), forgive yourself, commit to do better next time, and forget about it!.
  4. When you make a better choice (and you will)-CELEBRATE!!

I have a feeling there’s a lot more to say about habits so I think there will be a few more devotions coming up about them.

SHARING TIME:  What habit do you want to increase or decrease this year?

For me, I’d like to increase the habit of being kinder to those around me. I am not always the sweetest of people. YOUR TURN?
