Genesis 24: 62-63
Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev. He went out to the field one evening to meditate,
Many Christians think that meditation is an ungodly practice reserved for Eastern religions, cults or new age philosophy. It’s not!
Meditation is NOT a dirty word. I repeat—meditation is not a dirty word. In fact meditation is a godly practice. The first mention of the word comes in Genesis, the first book of the Bible!
So what exactly is meditation? You may have a picture in your mind of sitting cross-legged on the floor and humming. That may be a form of meditation, but it’s not the type I’m talking about.
Dictionary.com says meditation is continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation. In other words, mediation is simply the act of thinking about something for an extended time. So pick a Bible verse then spend some time thinking about it–and you’re meditating!
One of my favorite verses about meditating on God’s Word is Joshua 1: 8:
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
So you want a formula for a better life? This verse is it. First speak God’s Word; then think about God’s Word day and night; and finally put it into action. And then what happens? You will be prosperous and successful.
Now that is a wonderful promise! So as you can see meditating on God, His Word and His Works is a good thing—a very good thing.
Meditation is NOT a dirty word!
