THE BEST WAY TO STUDY THE BIBLE

Yesterday, I talked about some of the benefits reading and studying the Bible can give you. For me personally, it’s changed my life. It can do the same for you. It’s hard to explain the supernatural power that comes through God’s Word, but Jesus talked about it in one of his parables.

Matthew 7: 24-27

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

So what’s the best way to study the Bible?

It’s a very easy answer and it may surprise you. The best way to study the Bible is…

the way that works for you!

Lots of people, especially at this time of year, decide they’re going to do a read the Bible in a year study. And that’s a great way to do it, but that’s not the only way. I’ve done that several times but I discovered it’s not really the best way for me.

I find myself reading that day’s selection just to read it and then the next day the same thing. It seemed as if I was so busy reading, I forgot to pay attention to what God wanted me to learn.

So what are some other ways to read/study the Bible?

Pick a Bible book and read it. Then pick a different one and read that one….

Pick a topic and then look up verses with that theme.

Use a study Bible to help with understanding.

Google verses that confuse you and see what other people have to say about it.

Bible journaling

Bible memorization

Write special verses on index cards and read and reread them.

Buy a devotional book and read through it. Then buy another one and so forth.

There’s no right or wrong way to read/study the Bible. What is important is that whatever way you choose, do it consistently. Do I mean every day?

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean but I’m also a realist. If you only read the Bible 4 or 5 days a week but you do that every week, that’s wonderful!

The important thing is to make a commitment to study God’s Word regularly.

Who will you be—the foolish person who built their house on sand or the wise one who built his house on the rock—the Word of God?
