I Must Become Less

John 3:30

He must become greater; I must become less.”

Wow. That’s not something we hear very often anymore. Become Less? No. No. No. The world tells us we should become more. More important. More famous. More proud. More happy. More rich. Just more more more!

In John 3:30, John the Baptist is saying Jesus must become greater and he (John the Baptist) must become less. He is telling his followers that Jesus is more important than he is. That Jesus’ ministry is more important than his. That they should focus on Jesus not John. This seems like very good advice to me in my own life. Jesus needs to become greater, and I need to become less.

Less what?

Less entitled. Less selfish. Less self-centered. Less concerned about earthly matters. Less focused on what I want.

When I become less, I can become more focused on God. And the amazing thing is when I focus more on God, I have more joy, more peace, and more love. And isn’t that really what we all want?

Look at the image above of the two glasses, Now think about this, when the glass is empty, God can fill it (us) with amazing blessings that He has for us. But if we fill the glass ourselves with our pride, with material things, with our own selfish wants, we are cheating ourselves out of the blessings God has for us.

I must become less so that He becomes greater.
