Beauty for Ashes

Isaiah 61-2-4

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
    and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.

There’s so much pain and hurt and anger in this world and yet God promises peace to his children. It doesn’t make sense unless you remember God is an all-powerful and all-loving God who can and will take your broken heart and mend it back together.

Sounds wonderful but there are things we need to do as well.

First, we must draw near to God. It’s so easy in our pain to turn away from God. To be angry at him. James 4: 8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” We can’t experience God’s healing if we turn away from him.

Second, we must give ourselves time to heal. There is truth in the words that time heals all wounds. It doesn’t usually happen suddenly but if we keep our focus on God and his promises, we can allow the healing to happen.

Third, it’s important to understand that life will be different now. It won’t be the same but that doesn’t mean you have to live in a place of pain forever. But it takes faith in God to allow the healing to happen.

Psalm 147: 3

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
