FACING ADVERSITY GOD’S WAY

I started this series of devotions for others but even more for myself. It’s been a little over 2 months since I had my first treatment for my brain tumors with more to come at a later time. And God has been good to me–I’ve had no adverse reactions to the treatment at this point and am looking forward to my next MRI to see what’s happening with the tumor.

So, we’ve discussed the TEN STEPS on the journey of FACING ADVERSITY GOD’S WAY. I don’t think any one step is the key, but I think together they will give you peace and joy to continue in a godly manner as you struggle with your personal crisis whatever it may be.

Let’s review them:

  1. Read, Study, and Understand the Bible.
  2. Believe in God’s love for you.
  3. Accept God’s sovereignty.
  4. Expect trouble.
  5. Pray.
  6. Don’t get stuck in the valley.
  7. Praise God.
  8. Guard your thoughts, words, and actions.
  9. Keep an attitude of gratitude.
  10.  Focus on others.

I’ve tried to be real as I’ve written the devotions of this series. When we are suffering, the last thing we need is someone to spout off platitudes at us. But, in fact, the platitudes are rooted in biblical truths. Time does help heal us; what doesn’t kill us will make us stronger; God does love you no matter what’s going on in your life.

Not everyone knows the right thing to say to a person in pain, so I pray that you can be patient and kind to those who want to help you even if they don’t say it in the way you prefer.

My prayer is that perhaps one or two of the things I’ve written in this series has helped you through your own pain and suffering. May God bless you.

SHARING TIME: I’m sure there are other steps that could be helpful as well and I encourage you to leave a comment and share it with the rest of us who are struggling with life’s issues as well.

  1. Hi Lillian! The steps you list are a great guide. I would also encourage everyone to move toward a life of simplicity. Amidst adversity I find that I can best focus on the most important things in life…but then, after the adversity has passed I’ve learned that the life of simplicity is actually the best life of all! Praying for you!

  2. Lillian,
I’ve really enjoyed this series. I even have it bookmarked! The time will come when I need it (it will come for everyone), so i’m glad to have these thoughts gathered in one place.
There is the temptation for all of us to ask “Why me?” after a trial. As you’ve suggested, we will handle adversity better once we accept that we really should not be surprised about facing suffering in a fallen world, and once we start looking for what God can do through our trials. Thank you for sharing.

    • Thanks, Jim. I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it. God tells us that are pain is not wasted and that we should comfort others and that was my aim with these devotions. More to come in the future, but it won’t be the only focus of the blog. November’s going to be an exciting month, I’m inviting readers to share their GOD ENCOUNTERS with us.
