Lonely and Afflicted
A devotional by Alexis A. Goring
“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.”
–Psalm 25:16 (NIV)
Lately, I’ve seen a lot of posts on social media about people who feel lonely.
So today, I want to share a message to encourage your heart when you feel lonely and afflicted. There’s a song by Sandi Patty called “Always.” Allow me to share what I’ve learned from this beautiful melody.
The lyrics invite you to focus on God when you’re feeling down. Cling to Him when it feels like your world is falling apart. We have no need to fear because Jesus will still be here to support and love us when we feel lonely and afflicted. Sandi sings that when our friends are gone and we feel like we’ve been fighting through our problems all alone, Jesus is still present in our life. Jesus will dry our tears and calm our fears because He loves us.
The singer encourages us that when we’re feeling alone, we need to remember that Earth is not our home. We need to focus on the fact that one day, we’ll leave the pain of this troubled life on Earth behind and step into eternity with Jesus Christ in Heaven which is a glorious place that is free of pain and suffering.
When we feel lonely and afflicted, we need to focus on our Savior (Jesus Christ) and hold on to Him. We need to keep hope in our hearts that one day we will be home in Heaven and spend eternity in God’s Presence. We will experience perfect peace, love, and joy that never ends!
The last lines of this song remind us that God will always love us. It gives me hope to know that no matter who deserts me in this life here on Earth, the Creator of the Universe never will leave me (Hebrews 13:5).
So when you’re feeling alone, remember the words to this song. But even more importantly, put those words into action. Open your Bible and read God’s promises. A good place to start is the book of Psalms. My favorite verse to read when I feel depressed, lonely and afflicted, is Psalm 42:11 (NIV):
“Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.”
After I immerse myself in God’s Word, listening to songs like “Always” by Sandi Patty continue to encourage my soul. Pouring my heart out to God in prayer is also a wonderful way of relieving my loneliness and affliction. I encourage you to do the same. God is always listening and wants to help you!
Finally, if you’re still feeling lonely even after you’ve done everything I’ve suggested above, then try asking God to send people into your life who genuinely love Him and will genuinely love you. I did this years ago and God sent people into my life who, to this day, continue to be a blessing. Their friendship and presence in my life draw me nearer to Him.
Always remember this: God loves you. He will never leave you. Jesus Christ is the Best Friend you will ever have in this life. So lean into Him and trust Him to help you, especially when you’re feeling lonely and afflicted.
Thanks so much, Alexis. I agree there’s an epidemic of loneliness out there. It seems the more connected we become to the world through our phones, the less connected we are to people.
